Happy Father's Day!

In our reading, we hear how God created the heavens and the earth.  God gathered the water into one pace with dry land around it.  God called the waters “seas” and the dry land “earth”.  God saw that all he made was good.

In our gospel, Jesus and his disciples were in a boat, crossing a lake when a bad storm came with a strong wind which created waves which went over the side of the boat.  Jesus was asleep so the disciples woke him and asked, “Don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Jesus commanded the wind and waves to stop, saying, “Be still!  Be quiet!” Jesus asked the disciples why they were afraid and didn’t believe in him.  The disciples couldn’t believe what Jesus was able to do.  Jesus will calm our "storms" or problems, or troubles if we only let him.

Special Saint/Feast Day: - St. Joseph Cafasso – June 23

Joseph Cafasso was born in 1811 in Italy.  Joseph had loving parent who, although poor, were willing to sacrifice for his education.  When he was old enough, Joseph studied to become a priest.  Joseph met John Bosco (who also became a saint) and they were friends for the rest of their lives.

In 1833, Joseph was ordained a priest.  He became a theology professor and taught many young priests over the years.

Father Joseph became known as the priest who believed in the gentle and loving mercy of God.  He gave people courage and hope.  He guided many priests, religious and lay people.  He helped Father John Bosco begin his great work with troubled boys.

Father Joseph felt a great desire to help prisoners sentenced to death.  He went to them and heard their confessions.  He stayed with them, telling them of God’s love and mercy until they died.  He helped many to repent and die in the peace of Jesus.

We can never be too kind and understanding with people.  St. Joseph was especially known for his kindness to those in prison.  We may not be able to help those in prison as St. Joseph did, but we can pray for them.
