17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
No Children's Liturgy today as Cathy is away on vacation with her family!
If you could ask God for anything at all, what would you ask for? In our reading, we find out what King Solomon wants. He is a young king and he doesn't know how to help his people. He asks God for the gift of Wisdom so that he may know the difference between good and evil so that he will be a good king.
In our gospel, we hear two parables on how the kingdom of God is compared to a priceless treasure or a valuable pearl. Change the parable to what you would ask for. Would you give up anything to get that gift?
What do we need to do to get the promised "treasure" of God's Kingdom? Jesus already gave us the answers when he asked us to follow him and walk in his footsteps. Can we serve others with kindness? Be honest and fair? Love and forgive our neighbour? Share? Pray? Follow the Commandments, etc.?
