21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
In our reading, Shebna was in charge of the palace but because he was wicked, his duties were taken away and God gave them to Eliakim. Eliakim will be able to open and shut the door and he will be strong and secure. He will bring honour to the house of David. God was disappointed in Shebna.
In our gospel, Jesus asked the disciples who people think he is – some think John the Baptist, prophet Elijah, Jeremiah or some others a prophet. He asked Simon Peter who said he is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus changed his name to Peter, which means “rock”. The church of God will be built with Peter as its leader and it will be strong.
