22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

In our reading, Jeremiah has been telling others about God and they have been making fun of him.  He is telling them to change their lives.  Jeremiah is the one who suffers.  Sometimes he thinks he won’t even say God’s name but he knows in his heart that he must tell others about God.

In our gospel, Jesus was telling his disciples about how he was going to suffer, die, and then rise from the dead.  Peter told Jesus that that would not happen, that God would save him.  Jesus disagreed and said that this was God’s plan.  Jesus said they must accept their cross and follow him if they want to live forever.  They need to live for others, not just themselves.

Special Saint: – St. Rose of Lima – August 23rd

Isabel was born in Lima, Peru in 1586.  She was such a beautiful baby that she was called Rose.

As she grew older, Rose became more and more beautiful.  One day, her mother put a wreath of flowers on her head to show others her loveliness.  Rose only wanted Jesus to notice her and love her.

Rose realized that appearance had nothing to do with what a person was like on the inside.

Rose focused on the beauty of her soul with prayer and penance.

Rose worked hard gardening and sewing to support her parents who were very poor.

Even though her parents wanted her to marry, Rose joined the Dominican Third Order.  She lived in a little hut on her parent’s property where she was tempted by the devil.  She was often lonely and sad.  Rose offered her troubles to God.

Rose was 31 years old when she died in 1617.

St. Rose did not take pride in her physical beauty.  She tried to grow spiritually beautiful for Jesus.  When we are overly concerned with our appearance, we can ask St. Rose to help us focus on what is really important in our lives.
