In our reading, we hear the story of the people making a metal god and worshipping it.  This was a way of denying God.  They turned away from God who had done so much for them.  He had saved them by taking them out of Egypt.  Sometimes, we too, forget about God and make other things more important than God.

 

In our gospel, we hear about the lost sheep and the lost coin.  The Prodigal Son is yet another example of the great love of God when sinners like each one of us repents and returns to Him.  There is great rejoicing!
