25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Due to basement floor renovations at St. Agnes, there is no Children's Liturgy today. Sorry for any inconvenience.
In our reading, we hear how jealous people who think only about themselves do evil things. They fight and argue because they don't get what they want because they ask for the wrong reasons. When we live by God's wisdom, we are honest, kind, gentle, forgiving, and peaceful. Give up these evil ways. Stay near to God and He will stay near to you.
In our gospel, we hear how the disciples were arguing with one another over who was most important. When Jesus asked them about what they were talking about they were quiet. He explained to them that to be truly great and most important in the world we must serve others and make ourselves last. He showed them a little child and said, “Those who accept a little child like this because of me are also accepting me. And those who accept me are really accepting the One who sent me.”
Special Saint: St. Thomas of Villanova – September 22
Thomas was born in Spain in 1488. From his kind parents, he learned to be very generous to poor.
He became a priest and later an archbishop. His priests tried to convince him to change his old habit for much nicer robes. Archbishop Thomas felt it was more important to take good care of his people.
He would spend any money he received on feeding the poor or helping the hospital.
Before he died, Archbishop Thomas gave everything he had to the poor. He even asked that his bed be sent to the jail for prisoners to use. Archbishop Thomas died in 1555.
We can remember St. Thomas of Villanova’s words when we need to be more generous. He used to say: “If you want God to hear your prayers, you should help those who are in need.”
