2nd Sunday in Lent, Year B
In our reading, Paul is writing to the Romans . He tells them that God is on our side. He loves us (he created us). Nothing can take us away from the love of God because His love is so great. We will always have His love regardless of what bad things may be happening around us.
In our gospel, Peter, James, John and Jesus went up on a high mountain. Jesus changed before them and wore dazzling white clothes and his face shone like the sun. Then Moses and Elijah joined them and talked to Jesus. Peter offered to prepare 3 tents for them. God’s voice came telling them this was Jesus, His Son. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah were gone. The disciples weren’t to tell anyone about what happened until after Jesus rose from the dead.
Special Saint - St. Benedict – July 11th
Benedict was born in Italy in 480. He was from a rich family and he went to public school in Rome. He left Rome to find a place where he could be alone with God. He found a cave in the mountain of Subiaco.
A monk named Romanus taught Benedict about being a hermit and gave him food each day.
Benedict spent 3 years alone in the cave. The devil tempted him many times to go back to his rich home and easy life. Benedict devoted himself to prayer and penance and eventually the devil left him alone.
Benedict started 12 monasteries, teaching the monks to pray, work hard, and how to be humble. The monks taught the people how to read and write, how to farm, and how to work at different trades.
Benedict died on March 21, 547 at 67 years old.
St. Benedict reminds us that there is a deep need in us to spend some time with God. We don’t have to go to a mountain cave. We can stop in at church and visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. We can also have a prayer corner in our house. We will grow close to God through our daily conversations with Jesus. Lent is a great time to start our life of prayer.
