In our reading, God asked Jonah to go to the city of Ninevah to tell the people there that in 40 days the city of Ninevah will be destroyed unless they change their ways. The people of Ninevah believed what Jonah told them and they changed their evil ways by fasting and doing penance. God saw that they were truly sorry for all the evil they did and that they were changing their lives so He did not destroy the city.
In our gospel, Jesus came to Galilee and was proclaiming the Good News to the people. He told them to change their lives and believe in the Good News. Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee and he saw Simon and his brother Andrew who were putting their nets into the water. Jesus called to them “Come and follow me. From now on you will be gathering people, not fish!” The left their boats immediately and followed Jesus. Later, Jesus saw James and John and they were called and, they too, left their boat and followed Jesus.
