5th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

In our reading the prophet Isaiah tells us to do good works.  We are called to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, give a place to live to those who need it, tell the truth, help those who suffer, etc.  and you will be joyful.

In the Gospel, we are called the salt of the earth.  How much better are foods with salt on them...yum.  Some of my favourite foods have salt.  We are also called the light of the world.  Like Jesus, you must let your light shine for others so that people can see the good things you do, and give praise to your God who is in heaven.

Special Saint/Feast Day:       St. Giles Mary of St. Joseph – February 7th

Brother Giles Mary was born in Italy in 1729.  As a child, he learned the art of rope making and was good at his trade.

At 25 years old, Giles joined the Friars of St. Peter Alcantara.  Brother Giles became known for his simplicity and humility.  He always served God with love.  He would always answer the door quickly and with a smile.

He took gentle care of the poor, the homeless, and the lepers who came asking for help.

He would give out food and money to those in need knowing that it was St. Joseph who kept them from running out of food and money.  Brother Giles knew St. Joseph took such good care of Mary and Jesus and he spent his live spreading devotion to St. Joseph.

Brother Giles Mary died on February 7, 1812.

The life of Blessed Giles shows that it is not great things or important responsibilities that make us “successful” in God’s eyes.  What pleases God the most is a loving and generous heart.
