Baptism of the Lord
Years ago, at the time of Jesus, people were baptized as adults. It was marked as the start of their life of service to God. Jesus’ baptism was the start of his own work for God. Today, most baptisms are of babies.
Who has been baptized? Have you heard stories or seen pictures of your baptism? What do you remember?
Signs of Baptism:
Baptismal Font - some babies are submerged and others have water poured over their head
-Jesus was baptized in the river – a cleansing to remove original sin (Adam and Eve eating of the forbidden fruit)
-Priest said “I baptize you________ in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit”.
-water is a sign of life.
Candle -to remind us to be lights for all people.
Holy Spirit (dove) -we also receive the Holy Spirit like Jesus did.
Baptismal Gown -a white outfit – we become clean again
Why are we baptized?
- To be Sons and Daughters of God – we are part of God’s family the church – we are all brothers and sisters.
- To begin a life of service in small ways when we are young
Discuss as a family what you did for your baptism – any celebration, what did you wear, did you cry, etc.
