Easter Sunday, Year C
Jesus is risen! Alleluia, Alleluia. Today we celebrate that Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ lives among us.
In our reading, after Jesus had died, Peter was speaking to those who killed Jesus. He told them of Jesus of Nazareth who was anointed with the Holy Spirit. He went from place to place healing people and doing good works. The apostles were witnesses to all the things Jesus did. Jesus was killed on the cross and God raised him up on the third day. The apostles saw Jesus after he rose from the dead and he sent them out to preach to the people and tell them that Jesus will judge all people. Anyone who believes in Jesus will have their sins forgiven in his name.
In our Gospel, friends of Jesus (Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and John and others) went to the tomb to put some spices on his body but it wasn’t there. The stone had been rolled away. Two angels were there and asked them why they were looking for Jesus there when he was alive. They reminded the women that Jesus told them that he would be crucified but would rise again on the third day. The women went back and told the disciples what happened but they didn’t believe them. Peter went to the tomb to see for himself and wondered what all this meant.
