Easter Sunday, Year A

16/04/2017 09:00

Today is Easter!  We celebrate that Jesus has risen from the dead and is alive!  Our church is decorated to show that something amazing has happened – look at the banners, flowers, Easter candle, etc.  We are able to joyfully sing “Alleluia” – it is like a cheer – it means we are so happy that Jesus has risen from the dead!  Now he is alive again!

In our reading, Peter was telling others that Jesus went from place to place doing good works and healing people because God was with him.  He died on the cross but was raised on the third day.  The apostles ate and drank with Jesus after he rose from the dead.  The apostles were told to preach to others and tell them that everyone who believes in Jesus will have their sins forgiven.

In our gospel, Mary Magdalene and another Mary went to the tomb where Jesus was buried.  An angel with bright white clothing rolled the stone away and sat on it.  The guards fell down because they were frightened.  The angel told them that Jesus was raised from the dead and that he is going to Galilee to meet them.  The women left and they saw Jesus.  They fell down, hugged his feet, and worshipped him.  He told them to tell the other disciples to meet him in Galilee.

Jesus is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Special Saint/Feast Day:  Blessed Marie of the Incarnation – April 18th

Barbara was born in France in 1566.  At 17 years, Barbara was married to a man named Peter.  They loved and practiced their Catholic faith.  They had 6 children who developed a love of prayer and works of charity.

Even though Barbara was busy with her own family, she always found time to feed those who were hungry, taught people about the faith, helped the sick and dying, and gently encouraged people to change their sinful ways.

When her husband, Peter died, Barbara entered the Carmelite Order.  She spent the last 4 years of her life as a nun.  Her 3 daughters also became Carmelite nuns.

Barbara became Sister Marie of the Incarnation.  She joyfully worked in the kitchen washing the pots and pans.  Her daughter became the superior of the monastery.  Sister Marie willingly obeyed her being humble like Jesus.

Blessed Marie became close to God even though her life was always very busy.  She had many responsibilities.  She took care of her family and she was thoughtful about helping others.  Let us ask her to help us to be responsible and generous with our lives, too.
