In our reading, the prophet Isaiah is talking about Jesus coming and that he is the light of the world.  He talks about the magi bringing gifts of gold and frankincense and praising Him.

In our gospel, we hear of three wise men, or magi came from the east following a star.  They saw Herod, who wanted them to let him know where Jesus was.  They visited Jesus and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  They went home another way because God warned them about Herod in a dream.
