Third Sunday in Easter, Year A

30/04/2017 09:00

In our reading, Peter told the people of Judaea that Jesus gave lots of signs that he was God’s son and still they crucified him.  Even though he died, God freed him from death by raising him from the dead.  Jesus is more powerful than death.

In our gospel, two disciples were walking to Emmaus and they were talking about Jesus and all that happened to him.  Jesus came and walked with him but they did not recognize him.  They told him all that happened and that they thought he was the One who would save them.  Jesus thought they were foolish and he explained everything that Moses and the prophets said about them.  They recognized Jesus when he broke bread with them.

Special Saint:  - St. Mary Mazzarello – May 5

Mary Mazzarello was born in 1837 in Italy.  She was raised in a poor family and worked in the fields for them.

At 17 years, Mary joined a group of women devoted to our Lady called the Daughters of Mary Immaculate.

In 1860, Mary was sick with typhoid and couldn’t work in the fields anymore.  She started a dressmaking business with a friend.  They would pray together while sewing.

They talked about Fr. Don Bosco who worked with boys who needed help.  Soon, they wanted to begin a school for troubled girls.

Fr. Don Bosco liked their idea so he founded a new order of sisters (the Daughters of our Lady Help of Christians, also called Salesian Sisters) who would teach the young girls.

Mother Mary Mazzarello became their superior.  The community grew quickly and by 1900 there were nearly 800 convents and schools.  The sisters taught and did other works of charity.

Mother Mary died in 1881.

From her childhood, St. Mary Mazarello did whatever work she had to do with great love.  When she was unable to do one kind of work, she found something else she could do.  Because she was ready to serve, God entrusted her with important work in the Church.
